Luis Severino was a late scratch- about as late a scratch as I can recall in recent memory- in what was supposed to be his spring training debut on Tuesday, with what is being reported, after an MRI, as right rotator cuff inflammation. The Yankees have said that he will be shut down for two weeks, then he will receive an injection to treat the injury, then progress from there. He will almost certainly begin the season on the IL.   Not good news, by any stretch. We have to consider ourselves, as Yankee fans, fortunate that it isn’t straight-up...

Good morning! If you’re like me, this week started out promptly with the report that Aaron Hicks has signed a 7-year contract extension with the Yankees for a base of $70 million, according to friend-of-the-program Jack Curry. The terms of the contract begin this season, 2019. There is an eighth-year club option on the deal that is worth $12.5 million, so my quick math tells me the deal maxes out at 8-years, $82.5 million. The year-by-year breakdown, according to Joel Sherman: 2019: $6M salary, $2M signing bonus 2020-2023: $10.5 2024-2025: $9.5M 2026 team option: $12.5M or $1M buyout I have...

The Yankees signed Luis Severino to an extension Friday morning, just in the nick of time to avoid the arbitration hearing that was scheduled for later in the day Friday. The deal has a base of four years and $40 million, buying out his four arbitration seasons. There is a fifth-year club option on the contract, which would be his first free agent season. The deal can max out at $52.25 million over the next five years (thru 2023), according to Joel Sherman and Jeff Passan.   This is a great thing for the Yankees, who get to avoid...

The Sonny Gray trade to Cincinnati is officially official, the Yankees announced on Monday. He signed, basically, a three-year extension and the trade went through. The final deal is Sonny Gray and LHP Reiver Sanmartin-whom I’ve never heard of-to Cincy for 2B Shed Long (Reds’ No. 7 prospect according to MLB.com) and a Competitive Balance Pick in the draft, which will be in between the first and second rounds. The Yankees pulled a fast one, though, immediately sending Long to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for 21-year-old center fielder Josh Stowers, who was the No. 10 prospect in Seattle’s system,...

All offseason, Brian Cashman has made it abundantly clear that he intended to move RHP Sonny Gray when he received a worthwhile offer. It’s taken longer than many expected, but it seems that Cashman has finally found a package he likes. The Yankees are now set to send Sonny Gray to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for Cincinnati’s No. 7 prospect 2B Shed Long and a competitive balance draft pick (CBP). The hold up right now is that the Reds are trying to sign Sonny Gray to an extension beyond 2019 so they get more than one year of control...
